Frequently Asked Questions about GKS

Happy New Year! Hooray! First of all, thank you everyone for creating traffic in my blog site and for bombarding me questions about the Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) last year. Also, I would like to apologize for not being able to reply immediately to your comments due to my busy schedule.

So, you want to be a KGSP scholar? Are you sure about it? What made you decide? Oh come on, don’t ever tell the interviewers that you’re applying because you love Lee Min Ho and that you know how to dance Oppa Gangnam Style! πŸ˜‰

What is KGSP?

The Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) is a scholarship offered by the Korean Government to international students who would like to pursue an Undergraduate, Masters, or PhD in South Korea.Β

Since I have been receiving a lot ofΒ messages and comments asking about this program, I decided to compile a list of Q&As you can’t find tons of information in Google .

FYI: When we got the scholarship, nobody told us the reasons how we got in. Therefore, I cannot answer all of your questions nor give you a Β guarantee that you’ll get this scholarship even if you religiously read this blog.

1. I have zero knowledge of the Korean Language. Do I still have a chance to get this scholarship?

During our batch (2012), almost 80% of the students had no knowledge of the Korean Language. You don’t have to fret because these people were able to pass the TOPIK level 3 after the language training program. Of course, don’t expect to be fluent right away. Learning a language to pass a test is entirely different from learning a language to communicate properly.

2. Should I translate my documents in English or in Korean?

If you are from a native English speaking country (Philippines is excluded) and your documents are originally written in English, then it is okay. All you have to do is to have it stamped with an apostille.

It is highly suggested that you have your documents translated in Korean just to avoid any hassle when dealing with the immigration or other offices here in Korea. Make sure that those documents are signed by the Department of Foreign Affairs, or your Embassy in your country, and the translator to acknowledge its legitimacy. And, yeah, apostille.

3. Which schools are the Language Training Sites?

This varies every year. During our time, there were only 4 universities that accommodated all scholars for the language training. Then, last year, it became seven. This year, I have no idea. This is the last thing that you will know because only those who passed the medical exam will be assigned to these schools. Unfortunately, they don’t inform us which schools are they.

4. Can I transfer to a different university for the language training program?

No. No matter how much you dislike the university where you will be assigned, you will never be allowed to move to a different language school. My tip? Enjoy the company of your friends and study with them. You can ask those who know Korean very well already if you think that the teacher is not helping you at all. Think positively!

5. Accommodation? Food? Books?

You will have to deduct this from your scholarship allowance. You can choose wherever you would want to live but I suggest that you stay in the dorm if you are not yet familiar with Korea. You can also opt to eat meals in the dorm cafeteria or eat out. Your money, your call. Spend wisely πŸ˜‰

That’s it for now.

If you have more questions just comment below. But please refrain from asking how should I apply for this scholarship, what do they ask during the interview, how do i write my study plan, is the scholarship enough or even about the undergraduate/PhD program? These questions are already explained in the official website of NIIED.The answers may vary for every person or it is private haha. If I have to leave any tip, that would be – read and do as many research as possible about this program.

Thank you and good luck!

Annyeong!~

Hi! I would like to apply for the KGSP. My plan is to graduate firsts semester of senior year, apply for the KGSP, and hopefully make it. I was wondering that if I were to get accepted, would I be able to ask for a leave of absence during the first semester so that I can come back for graduation. Also, would I be able to apply if I am a resident in the current country I am living in or do I need to be a citizen?

      Hi Karo!

Thanks for the question. I don’t think it is possible to do that for the following reasons: (1) You are not allowed to go home during your first year in South Korea – doing the Korean language immersive classes; (2) Your transcript or certificate of graduation (specifying that you will graduate) is required when applying for the uni and/or visa. What you could do is complete your studies then try the next round, or apply during your second semester when you are simply waiting for graduation πŸ™‚

    Hi Melanie!
Thanks for your informative posts. πŸ™‚ I’m currently at the last stage of preparing my documents for submission. The part that I still have to accomplish is the GPA. Unfortunately, my uni can’ta provide a direct conversion scale for 1.0 to 4.0. Do you have any suggestions or other means of conversion. I learned that you’re from the PH too so I believe that your reply will be of great help. Thanks!

Hi! Im from the Philippines tio. And im actually prepaeing my application for KGSP this yearm But i have some quesrions regarding my TOR, since in my university GPA/GWA for the whole degree program is not elaborated. And upon checking GWA every semester is also not indicated. So im planning to attached a certified true copy of my grades where GWA per semester is inidcated. But….. How about the GPA for the whole degree? Do i need to ask my university for a certification for this? Or can i just compute mine based on tje GWA i got every semester?

Hello! Thank you for dropping by πŸ™‚ Koreans are very strict when it comes to documents. I guess you can compute on your own; however, if you have the time to acquire a certificate indicating your total GWA – then that would be better πŸ™‚

I worry about stay in Korea. I read the KGSP guideline, they said that we “MUST” live in a university’s dormitory during study Korean language. Is that necessary? Can we live in other place like apartment, room for rent or accommodation near the university?

Hi! Do you know what are the guidelines for application of scholarship in Korea? I need your help badly. My best friend is applying and she already submitted the requirements however, she was advised that a CERTIFICATE OF GWA is needed and she is not informed and that is not in the guidelines also. (The requirement of GWA Cert I think is provided only by the embassy) But will it be possible for them to consider it?

I really really need your help. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

      Hello Maria,

Thank you for visiting my blog! Before anything else, please take note that the kgsp rules and requirements frequently change therefore my answers may or may not be correct this time around.

Anyway, what do you mean by certificate of GWA? Are you referring to her transcript? Of course, that one is definitely required to show whether her grades qualify or not.

However, if you were referring to the document which provides a rough comparison between a Philippine University’s gwa and korean style grading – then, that one, too, is actually necessary even if it is not on the list πŸ™‚ You will actually need it to fill the forms properly — if it is still the same form. Anyway, good luck to your friend. She can just call the person she sent it to and tell them that she’ll forward that document asap.

    Hi Melanie,

I would just like to know your thoughts about this. So, I have decided that I will apply for KGSP via embassy track.. but then, there’s this uni that I got the exchange some emails with because I was inquiring about their MBA program. They were very accomodating and all and said that I’m qualified to apply for the said degree and even mentioned that he can help me as a reference, saying to just follow the application process and he can help in recommending me. He’s the head professor for that department so I think he’s gonna be a great help for me. Do you think I will have higher chance if I go to the uni route for the application? Coz I’m really worried if it will give the highest assurance of getting in since for the uni route, it’s once chance only unlike for the embassy route. What do you think about this??

Hello patricia! No one can really tell which is an easier route. You may be recommended by a professor, but remember, even though you pass the university screening, you will still undergo the kgsp administration’s screening. Meanwhile, if you apply via embassy, if you pass their screening, you’re free to choose your university. Weigh your options carefully πŸ™‚ Goodluck!

I’m actually leaning more on going to the university route..but with the 2 options I have, I’d like tl ask one more thing. In regards to the dorm fee, I understand that it’s gonna be deducted directly from the 900k won allowance and that it would depend on the dorm rates as well. What if the uni has an allowance of 200k won per month for the fee and the rest of the fee will be shouldered by the student. Does that mean that it’s gonna come directly from our pocket or what?

    Hello,
I’m thinking of applying for KGSP this year. But I have this big fear. I heard that when you start your degree you have to maintain a certain GPA. And if your grades are lower than 80 points out of 100 points you are not able to submit theses. So my question is it hard to maintain your GPA ? And have you heard of someone failing in this program? In my university my grades average is over 80 points out of 100 points, but I have this fear that I won’t be able to maintain my GPA in my chosen university in Korea as the level of studies is different and it’s said that in Korea it is really hard to be a student and to study in university.

Hello, it is sad to hear this from you. The KGSP program is a highly competitive program – which means, many of the people who apply to this program excel in their respective field. If you are confident to get this program, then you should be confident that you will not fail your program… or else… you may have to complete your studies without the scholarship πŸ™

You are not allowed to have part-time job during your first year in the program (Korean language school, that is). However, under the d2 visa, you are allowed to have a part-time job. Ask your uni’s intl office for a certain form that will notify them that you are getting a part-time.

Hello there! I’m so glad I found a Pinoy scholar here. Anyway, I read in another post (although she didn’t pass) that applying through the embassy is much stricter than when applying through the university- do you have any feedback regarding this? I’m actually trying to look for more information regarding this scholarship but to no avail, I only get very basic information like what this scholarship is about. I tried the embassy’s website but I only found info about who passed this year’s screening. I want to know what the requirements are and such but… Hmm, okay maybe my google-ing skills are just lacking. Haha Hopefully I get more info before the next application starts- I believe it begins on January right? Based on your posts, that is.

Anyway, congrats you’re probably almost done with your MA by now. I hope to be on your shoes by next year or 2017!! πŸ™‚

Hello πŸ™‚ Congratulations if you’ve made it but if you haven’t started applying… then, my answer will be.. it still depends on the university you will apply for. The thing is, when you are applying at the embassy, you will be competing against everyone from the country. But if you apply from the university directly, you’d be competing with so many other nationalities as well. So, it all depends on your preference πŸ™‚

    Hi Melanie!

I’m really thankful that I found your blog! I have been researching about KGSP (I’m a little too excited for next year’s scholarship opening, but I just really want to get everything right and complete) and I was wondering about applying through a university. Is it possible to apply for, like, two universities in one go? Or is it strictly only one university? I really want to get into Masters of Public Health in SNU but it seems that it’ll be hard to get Univ recommendation from S.K.Y. since there are a lot of applicants. So I thought maybe I can try to apply for SNU and Ajou University? Sorry if my question sounds dumb or something. ;~; I would really appreciate your answer. Thank you!

Hi Martin! Will you attend a language institution first or enter the university already? If you attend the language course first – your safe, I guess. During my time, we were asked to submit/present our diploma to our language institution. They weren’t really that strict (or it may vary per university). If you cannot bring your diploma with you, just talk to the staff in your language institution about it.

However, if you will have to enter the university already and must process the D2 visa, that is the time when you really have to present it. Also, don’t forget the apostille πŸ˜‰
