On the second day of our Korean Government Scholarship Program Orientation, we went on a field trip. We visited Yangdong Village, Pohang City Hall, POSCO, and Sae Maeul. We travelled for almost an hour to get from one place to another, and this made us tired towards the end of the day. I was happy to know though that we were going to places I have never been. I learned so much on that day. We felt like VIPs when the mayor of Pohang warmly welcomed us.
My favorite part of the trip was visiting POSCO.
POSCO is a steel manufacturing company in Korea β known for being the best in Asia. POSCO contributes to the local community by providing jobs to over 8,000 people who work here. Also, POSCO promotes an eco-zone city by planting over 1 million trees in their factory area. When we were inside POSCO, it didn’t feel nor smell like I was in a certain factory. There were sprinklers on the street side to prevent the place from being dusty. The trees they planted helped absorbed carbon dioxide and other bad gases too.
The staff of POSCO led us inside the shaping and cutting area of steel… and boy, I felt like I was a five year old who was so amazed in the process! Their computerized machines made everything fast and efficient. I couldn’t help but think of the factories back at home. I wish they’d see POSCO and follow their principles (re: environment at least).

July 29, 2013 at 10:40 pmWow!! I can’t wait to experience all that!! I’m a 2013 KGSP grantee :D, will be living in Jeonju the first year for the language instruction. Pohang city looks really nice! Thanks for sharing your orientation in this blog, it makes me feel more at ease with all the process of entering Korea… since I come from a very different country and culture, I have to admit I am super nervous :S

July 30, 2013 at 1:59 amNIIED hasn’t send the e-tickets yet, but since I live on the opposite side of the planet, and it takes me around 34 hours to get to Korea, I will be probably flying between the 23rd and 26th of august, and will be arriving to Korea between the 25th and 28th. They said there will be people waiting for us in Incheon Airport from Jeonju Uni π I’m looking forward to your upcoming posts about Jeonju β₯
